Signs of ADHD in your child's behaviour

by Tatiana Whitehead, Davis Facilitator

Dear Parents,

Is this your child?

  1. They might be 13, 10, or 8 years old, but sometimes it feels like they're only 2.

  2. They have an exceptionally good photographic memory.

  3. Their jokes revolve around toilet humour.

  4. Their idea of play includes hiding when someone rings the doorbell, scaring people, provoking others, and arguing.

  5. They often say "no" to everything, showing a general negativity and denial.

  6. They might spend a lot of time playing computer games, and could have intense interests in LEGO and fishing, demonstrating hyperfocus in these areas.

  7. They have typical childhood fears: of the dark, insects, being left alone at home, and imaginary creatures.

  8. Your child manipulates you.

  9. They know everyone’s weak points and use this knowledge to control others.

  10. They struggle with emotional regulation.

  11. They get overly excited easily and can't seem to stop.

  12. They don’t recognise boundaries or limits.

  13. They don't listen to you.

  14. They repeat the same behaviours and don’t learn from experience.

  15. You feel like all your energy is being consumed, leaving you drained, yet it seems like it all vanishes into a black hole.

  16. You find it difficult to understand your child or to communicate effectively with them.

  17. You try to find ways to manage their behaviour through restrictions on activities they enjoy.

  18. You are deeply concerned about their future.

Dear Parents, everything you've just read is characteristic of ADHD. All these behaviours are your child’s attempts to be liked and loved; they simply lack certain internal concepts and an understanding of life’s rules. What they need is to fill these gaps in knowledge and experience. Words and moralising alone won’t suffice. However, using simple techniques like modelling with white clay, your child can easily come to understand the laws of life.
