What are the Davis® Learning Strategies — Foundation Concepts?
 
The Davis Learning Strategies — Foundation Concepts Workshop is the second workshop in the Davis Learning Strategies series.
 
It builds on the tools introduced in the Davis Learning Strategies Basic Workshop and is designed for educators and other professionals who have completed the Basic Workshop and are already using the strategies in practice. It is also open to parents and caregivers who have completed the Basic Workshop and are using Davis Learning Strategies with their own child under eight.
 
Together, these concepts provide a foundation for understanding learning, experience, social interactions and personal responsibility.
 
Through guided discussion, practical demonstrations, hands-on modelling and supported practice, you will learn how to introduce these concepts in ways that are concrete, meaningful and accessible to young learners.

This workshop is intended for:
Early-years and primary teachers
Special educational needs and learning-support professionals
Teaching assistants and other education professionals working with young children
Davis Learning Strategies practitioners who want to deepen and extend their classroom practice
Parents and caregivers who want to use Davis Learning Strategies with their own child under eight
 
Important prerequisite
Participants must have:
Completed the Davis Learning Strategies Basic Workshop
Gained practical experience using the Basic Workshop strategies
 
This prerequisite ensures that everyone arrives with the shared knowledge and practical foundation needed for the advanced material.

An experiential approach to teaching Self, Change and Consequence

Workshop format
Live, interactive training
 
This is an active and engaging training experience — not a dry webinar. The workshop is designed to recreate the collaborative, hands-on character of an in-person Davis workshop as closely as possible.
 
The workshop includes:
“Camera-on, mic-on” video conferencing for real-time interaction
Presenter demonstrations of the Foundation Concept activities
Hands-on work using clay and other workshop materials
Adapted pair and small-group practice in breakout rooms
Opportunities to connect the concepts with your own classroom or home experience
Content review and Q&A sessions to reinforce learning as you progress

Your Workshop Presenter
Richard Whitehead
Richard Whitehead is Director of Davis UK & Ireland and an experienced Davis Facilitator, trainer and educator. A former SENCo at Malvern College, he has extensive experience supporting dyslexic and other neurodivergent learners, working with families and mentoring teachers and education professionals.
His experience with parents and younger children includes presenting the How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk parent communication workshop, which equips parents with practical ways to acknowledge children’s feelings, encourage cooperation and build respectful relationships.
Richard combines this family-centred perspective with specialist knowledge of Davis approaches to literacy, attention, maths and foundational concepts.

Academic skills matter. But children also need the concepts that enable them to understand where learning happens, what learning involves and why it has value.
